Arkansas Comic Con 2020 canceled over concern for safety and uncertainty due to COVID-19, date pushed until 2021
For Immediate Release – July 14, 2020
Arkansas Comic Con has been canceled for 2020 due to an abundance of caution for our attendees, guests, vendors, artists, and volunteers, in regards to the uncertainty involved with, and safety issues concerning, planning an event in the current climate of COVID-19.
During the most recent press conference with Governor Hutchinson, Dr. Nate Smith, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Health said, “There are clearly risks associated with any activity that brings people together.” He continued, “In some cases, it’s just a matter of it being intrinsically more risky to bring people together during a time when you have a pandemic.”
There is currently no statewide mandate forcing people to wear masks, only a suggested adherence to recommendations. Dr. Smith went on to say, “In general, any kind of activities that bring people in close contact together, without wearing masks, those are going to be problematic, and those are going to be things that people might consider minimizing or putting off until after we have less COVID-19 transmission in our communities.”
“Our job is to bring fun and family friendly entertainment to Arkansas. With the rise in cases in Arkansas, and the uncertainty in the ever changing climate involved with COVID-19, it just seems like we would be adding fuel to the public safety fire by trying to put on a show right now in Little Rock,” said AVC Conventions co-owner Greg Hanks. “After speaking extensively with the management at the Statehouse and the Arkansas Health Dept., as well as consulting all local and statewide governmental ordinances and mandates, we have decided to cancel Arkansas Comic Con for 2020 and begin plans for 2021. We are in the process of trying to re-book some of this year’s guests for our proposed show dates of Sept. 11-12, 2021. We will be back earlier in the year for the recently announced Little Rock Anime Festival, which will also be held at the Statehouse Convention Center on January 23, 2021.”
Refunds for Arkansas Comic Con 2020 will begin to be processed immediately for attendees, vendors, and artists. No action is needed to begin this process.
